NEWS, EVENTS & COURSES
ENNISCOE HOUSE
Enniscoe House will open again for the season on 1st April 2006,
and will remain open until the end of October 2006. We are also
open over New Year and into early January for group bookings. The
self catering apartments are open all year round.
We have now completed the restoration programme on the bedrooms,
and dinning room. Some of the results can be viewed in our picture
gallery, and we hope you will agree that they look good. This spring
we are starting the big job of replacing the roof on the wing behind
the main house. This does not directly affect the guest accommodation
but will give us a much needed extra laundry room and other domestic
spaces.
ENNISCOE GARDENS
The ornamental garden in its present form dates back to the late
19th century. It has been restored with the support of FAS, Meitheal
Mayo, and The Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme. It
was officially declared open by Dr James McDaid, T.D. then Minister
for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, in October 1999.
This year we are concentrating on establishing new borders around
the lawns, and reducing the area under grass. There should be a
good show of dahlias this summer, and new roses and rockery plants
to admire. Joy Madden continues to be in charge of the garden, and
has two students from the National Botanical Garden coming on placements
in spring and summer.
The new group in the organic market garden has settled in and we
should have our usual good supply of vegetables and fruits for the
house. They have also started a programme for local schools, following
an open day last summer. Two schools are sending groups in on a
regular basis to work under supervision on their own plots, growing
vegetables of their choice. Should be good fun for everyone involved
and hopefully will encourage a new generation of gardeners.
Access to the gardens and pleasure grounds is available to Enniscoe
guests at any time, without charge. There is a separate entrance
for the public through the Heritage Centre.
ENNISCOE WOODLANDS and Lakeside Walks
We are still working on the Restoration of Native Woodlands Programme.
Some old and shaky bridges have been replaced and trails cleaned
up. The young trees are doing well, and now it is possible to get
into the old woodlands, and by late spring more paths will be opened
up so that it will be possible to walk a complete circuit of the
estate.
THE HERITAGE CENTRE
Mayo North Heritage Centre is situated in one of the old farm yards
behind the main house and walled garden. The centre runs a small
museum, tea room and shop, and this year will be open from 1st April
to end of October. The family history unit is part of the national
network of genealogy centres set up by the Irish Family History
Foundation. This centre covers the northern half of county Mayo
and is open all year round. To contact it directly see our links
page.
This year the Old Engine and Vintage Tractor Cub will have their
Heritage Day on 16th July. This has turned into an annual event,
and takes place around the Heritage Centre and other yards as well
in the field beside the house. There are standing engines and tractors
of course, but also vintage cars, motor cycles, a stream engine
and an old fashioned threshing engine (threshing oats specially
grown here) craft demonstrations and much else. If you are staying
at Enniscoe or are in the area come and join in the entertainment.
As usual the centre will be running courses in blacksmithing and
crafts during the year. For further information contact:

We look forward to seeing some of you back at Enniscoe in 2006,
and to welcoming new faces. DJ, my son, is here full time now. He
lives in The Rent Office, an apartment in the main yard behind the
house, and does appreciate having his own front door. Also makes
for a harmonious working relationship between mother and son!
We look forward to meeting you this year.
